The New Normal Consulting founders all have their roots in specialty outdoor retail. “We view independent reps as being both integral to and an indicator of the health and well-being of outdoor specialty retail,” says New Normal Consulting’s Brad Werntz.

Geoff O’Keeffe of New Normal Consulting  adds: “Skilled sales representation is an essential driver of the differences between what it truly ‘specialty’ and the more mass-oriented, commoditized retail. Brand designers, engineers and marketers put enormous amounts of thought and care into their products, which demand that we tell their stories and relay their vision down through the sales process to the consumer. .”

The financial crisis of 2007 – 2009 had a profound effect on the economic health of specialty retail markets. Ongoing disruption to the retail sector continues today in the form of ongoing changes to how goods are bought and sold. Specialty retail has not yet stabilized.

While all segments of specialty retail distribution were impacted by the recession and subsequent disruption, specialty sales reps in the outdoor industry have been put under particular pressure. Sales Reps in the Outdoor Industry sets out to examine these impacts, as reps can be considered an indicator species that defines the health of the entire market’s ecosystem.
