The financial crisis of 2007 – 2009 had a profound effect on the economic health of specialty retail markets. Ongoing disruption to the retail sector continues today in the form of ongoing changes to how goods are bought and sold. Specialty retail has not yet stabilized.

While all segments of specialty retail distribution were impacted by the recession and subsequent disruption, specialty sales reps in the outdoor industry have been put under particular pressure. We set out to examine these impacts, as reps can be considered an indicator species that defines the health of the entire market’s ecosystem.
